Precision Underground Pipe Location
Every sewer repair, trenchless installation, or property construction project that involves digging near existing sewer infrastructure requires accurate pipe location first. Digging without locating risks striking and rupturing your sewer lateral — turning a planned project into an emergency repair.
We use an electronic sonde transmitter deployed via the sewer camera, combined with an above-ground receiver, to trace the precise route and depth of your sewer line across your property. The result is a reliable, accurate pipe map that guides excavation, repair planning, and construction safely.
When Sewer Line Locating Is Required
The Sewer Line Locating Process
Locating a sewer line accurately requires specialized technology. The process usually begins by inserting a high-resolution sewer camera attached to a stiff push-rod into the sewer line via a cleanout. Built into the camera head is a "sonde"—a small radio transmitter that emits a signal at a specific frequency (typically 512 Hz).
As the camera travels through the pipe, a technician walks above ground with a digital receiver tuned to the sonde's frequency. The receiver picks up the electromagnetic field generated by the sonde, allowing the technician to track the exact path of the pipe, even under thick concrete slabs, asphalt driveways, or deep soil. The receiver also calculates the precise depth of the sonde, which is crucial for excavation planning.
Once the line is traced, we physically mark the surface using industry-standard green spray paint or flags, indicating both the path and depth of the sewer lateral. This provides a clear, visual map for contractors, landscapers, or our own repair teams to work safely around the infrastructure.
What We Provide
Cost Guide: Sewer Line Locating
Locating services are highly affordable compared to the cost of accidentally striking a utility line during excavation. Because the equipment is the same, locating is almost always bundled with a sewer camera inspection.
- Standard Camera Inspection & Locating (Up to 1 hr)$150 - $300
- Extensive Locating (Complex/Commercial lines)$300 - $500+
- Included with Trenchless Repair/ReplacementFree / Included
*If a cleanout is not accessible and we must remove a toilet to access the sewer line, an additional nominal fee usually applies.
